Rani Garner is a career artist living in rural Georgia. Originally from Phoenix, Arizona, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Arizona State University and has been painting professionally since 1989. Early-morning walks down country roads are a major source of inspiration for her landscapes. She seeks out exceptional light, the main subject of her art. She is a frequent visitor to the Gulf Coast and an avid painter of coastal skies and water, prized by collectors who are reminded of their own meaningful moments of communion with light and what it symbolizes to them. Another artist has said of her work, “It is as if she has taken the best parts of a day and condensed them down into one single, perfect moment.”
Rani’s paintings are represented by galleries throughout the Southeast and she has exhibited widely in both solo and group shows. Her work is included in the collections of Baptist South Medical Center, Federal Reserve Bank, Baptist MD Anderson, Bank of America and the Marriott Hotel.

I am fascinated by light in the landscape and am inspired to paint whenever I encounter exceptional light. I seek it out in the early morning or evening, favoring extreme contrasts of light and dark. I create this contrast right at the outset by wiping out the light areas on the toned canvas, creating the drawing with a rag—my favorite stage of the painting process. I also enjoy using a painting knife, which works especially well depicting moving water.
I am always trying to heighten the drama and mystery of what was actually there before my eyes, wanting to make it more meaningful, more beautiful, and I do this by emphasizing the light. It is really the subject in most of my paintings, and I have a real reverence for it.
